Step 1 - Assess Your Passion And Aptitude For Becoming An Attorney

Do you really want to become an attorney?

Start by researching and evaluating what an attorney's job entails.

  • Job Duties - Attorney's job duties include providing legal advice to clients, representing clients in courts, presenting and arguing in favor of clients, researching law cases, preparing and filing legal documents such as lawsuits, trusts, deeds etc. Do these job duties excite you?

  • QualitiesAttorneys require certain qualities to be happy and successful in their job such as - communication skills, presentation skills, emotional skills, problem-solving skills, analytical skills etc. Do you have, or can you develop, these qualities?

  • Work Schedule - Registered nurses work in shifts which could be nights, weekends, as well as holidays. Registered nurses are required to be on-call some days of the week. Are you open to this work schedule?

  • Education - You will a minimum of 7 years of education after high school - 4 years for a bachelors degree followed by 3 years of law school.

    In addition to graduating from the law school you have to pass the bar exam in the state where you practice law. Are you committed to this education requirements?

  • Pay - Attorneys salary ranges from below $61,400 to $208,000 and above. Salary depends on the number of years of experience, specialization in certain areas, and job location. Will you be satisfied with this salary range?



Step 2 - Volunteer in a legal organization

If possible volunteer in a legal organization such as a law firm, or at the legal department of a corporation, or legal entities of the government.

Volunteering will give you a first hand view of an attorneys duties, responsibilities, qualities, and daily job duties and schedule.

Volunteering in a legal organization will give you the opportunities to connect with attorneys. Talk to them and get their inputs - what they like about their job, what they do not like about their job etc.

Volunteer for a few months, for a few hours every week, and you will get a fairly good idea if becoming an attorney is the right career for you.



Step 3 - Get A Bachelors Degree - Preferably In A Related Field

You need a 4 years bachelors degree before you can apply for a law school.

You can graduate in any major, but majors such as social sciences, law, history etc. will help you in your law school application.



Step 4 - Get A Paid Job As An Attorney

After you graduate from law school get a paid job in a law firm, government, or a corporation

You will start your career in law as an associate attorney and grow gradually to become an attorney and then a partner.

Consider getting certifications that will qualify you to work as a registered nurse in specialized areas. The pay increases if you specialize and gain expertise in a certain.

Networking with other attorneys and law professionals, and exchanging ideas will help you keep up to date with the latest trends in the legal field.
